A simple first step: buy a hygrometer (humidity meter, around $10–20) to track basement humidity. This way, you’ll know if your efforts are working.

Use a Dehumidifier
Place a basement-rated dehumidifier in the area, ideally with an automatic humidity control setting (aim for 40–50% humidity).
Make sure it drains automatically into a floor drain or a pump, so you don’t have to empty it constantly.
Improve Ventilation
If possible, open basement windows on dry days to let fresh air circulate.
Add vent fans or connect the basement to your home’s HVAC system for better airflow.
Fix Water & Moisture Sources
Check for leaks in plumbing, walls, or windows and seal them.
Inspect the foundation for cracks where water could seep in.
Make sure your gutters and downspouts are directing rainwater away from the foundation.
Insulate Cold Surfaces
Pipes, ductwork, and even basement walls can cause condensation.
Wrap cold-water pipes with foam insulation to stop dripping.
Waterproof Basement Walls & Floors
Apply sealant or waterproof paint to concrete walls and floors to reduce seepage.
Use Moisture Absorbers
Place desiccants (like DampRid or silica gel packs) in corners or storage areas for extra absorption.
Control Laundry & Appliances
Vent dryers outside, never into the basement.
If you hang laundry downstairs, use a dehumidifier at the same time.
